The Organic Chem Lab Survival Manual: A Student’s Guide to Techniques (10th Ed.) by James W. Zubrick is a practical and concise guide designed to help students navigate the often challenging world of organic chemistry labs. The manual simplifies complex laboratory techniques, providing step-by-step instructions and essential tips to ensure success in lab work.
From handling equipment to understanding experimental procedures, this compressed edition offers clear guidance and troubleshooting advice, making it an invaluable resource for students aiming to master organic chemistry lab skills efficiently.
According to the author, “This tenth edition reflects changes prompted both by external circumstances and personal initiative, while maintaining a focus on fundamental techniques and the importance of doing things right the first time. Feedback from users and reviewers has been instrumental in guiding updates, along with insights gained from observing my own students in the lab and classroom.
Some content has been moved online, including earlier discussions on “The Theory of Distillation” (Chapter 34) and the detailed operation of a dual-beam IR spectrometer (Chapter 32, “Infrared Spectroscopy”), aligning with current teaching trends noted by reviewers. The separate section on “Theory of Extraction” has been integrated into Chapter 15 (“Extraction and Washing”) for a more cohesive presentation, with updates to both the text and illustrations for a more contemporary feel.
In Chapter 2, the artwork for “Keeping a Notebook” has been updated to reflect the transition to gridded “engineering format” notebook pages. Though the core experiments—a technique and a synthesis—remain the same, a new section on writing notebook entries “by the numbers” has been added.
This aims to alleviate the common anxiety students face over “what should I write,” introducing both “The Golden Rule” and “The Silver Rule” to help guide students in keeping accurate research notebooks.
Chapter 12, “The Melting Point Experiment,” now includes the SRS DigiMelt, a modern digital equivalent to the Mel-Temp, alongside traditional instruments and techniques.
One of the most significant, though personally disappointing, changes is the recognition that chemistry handbooks have been largely replaced by smartphones and internet access. It’s been over a decade since a new edition of Lange’s Handbook of Chemistry was published, a loss for the field.
Norbert Lang, co-editor of The CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, started his own during the Great Depression, possibly due to the growing emphasis on physics over chemistry in The CRC Handbook. Despite these shifts, we continue to guide students through this evolving landscape, highlighting both the opportunities and challenges ahead.”
