So I always found it curious that many people had so much trouble with organic chem. For the most part, I have to agree that it’s usually taught very poorly–sorry about that to most of you teachers/profs out there who take offense. But eventually I realized that the reason I found it easy was that I taught myself the subject, and I did it when I was quite young. Made a difference. A ~big~ difference.
There’s nothing intrinsically difficult about organic concepts. What seems to make it difficult–or at least fails to make it clear–is that what’s obvious to the teachers isn’t said explicitly since it seems to them, well, obvious. Learning the language makes a lot of that “obviousness” intuitive.
We learn languages in two ways. Before about age 13 ±, we imprint it: listen to it for a while, feel totally lost, and then one day the scales fall from our eyes (OK: ears) and we’re suddenly fluent in it. After that learning window closes, it’s drudgery. So naturally when I saw Klein’s book, I had to see if he, too, made the leap that I had. He did. He presents it as a language and with any luck, it will revolutionize organic learning, even if it doesn’t improve the teaching as much as I’d like. I gave a copy to my stepdaughter. She immediately got it.
Great idea for a book, and quite good execution. If you’re taking organic chem and you’re having a tough time, this may well be your salvation.”
