According to the writer, “This book is the result of a personal voyage of historical discovery. In 2002, I enrolled in a masters’ course in history of science, technology, and medicine in London. I set out to understand the history of the science that had beguiled me more than 20 years previously. Training as a synthetic organic chemist in Cambridge in the late 1980s, I had submitted to the field’s unique discipline.

Now, as a returning student, I was drawn into its history. I wanted to know when, where, and why organic synthesis began. How, I wondered, had my predecessors learned to manipulate, modify, and mimic organic nature? How did they acquire the constructive capability that I, like many synthetic organic chemists, regarded as the defining feature of my field?

As early as 1860, the arch-propagandist for organic synthesis, Marcellin Berthelot, used synthetic organic chemistry’s ability to mimic and transcend nature’s constructive power to justify its status as a uniquely productive, experimental—rather than observational—science.

“Chemistry,” Berthelot famously declared, “creates its own object.”1 As this book will show, his claim for what synthesis could then accomplish was somewhat exaggerated. The point, however, remains clear: Synthesis was a philosophically as well as practically significant science.”
