Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry seamlessly integrates concepts, practice, and applications to provide a cohesive and enriching reading experience. Organic chemistry, as a discipline, often focuses less on exhaustive theoretical explanations and more on testing students’ understanding of its practical applications.
To excel in this field, students must master both the foundational concepts and their application through consistent problem-solving. Recognizing this need, I have combined both elements in this book, offering a structured approach to learning organic chemistry.
This work reflects my teaching experience and my desire to present the subject in a way that resonates with students, providing them with accessible and comprehensive material.
Basic Concepts of Organic Chemistry is the first edition of its kind, organized into seven distinct sections. The first section lays the groundwork by introducing fundamental concepts, including a dedicated portion on organometallics (Section 1.17), designed to equip students with essential knowledge in this area.
The second section focuses on the nomenclature of organic molecules, addressing both simple and heterocyclic compounds. Unlike many textbooks that either overlook or scatter this topic, author has consolidated it into a single section for ease of reference.
The third section delves into functional group chemistry, covering properties, synthesis, and reactions for each group. Section four introduces basic biochemistry, while section five explores the fundamentals of stereochemistry. Section six is dedicated to spectroscopy, detailing techniques such as IR, UV, MS, and NMR, with an emphasis on proton and carbon NMR.
The final section provides an introductory overview of synthetic organic chemistry, incorporating insights from my research experiences and basic laboratory experiments. This section aims to enhance students’ practical understanding of organic chemistry.
The author of this book holds an MS degree in Organic Synthesis, having completed an MSc in Chemistry from Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad. With over a decade of teaching experience, this book has been developed to inspire students, educators, and researchers by providing updated content on organic chemistry.
Designed to support students, teachers, and researchers, the book aims to enhance understanding of fundamental organic chemistry concepts, which form the foundation of the subject.
