According to the authors, “This book is the result of many years of teaching experience in senior design courses at West Virginia University (WVU), Auburn University, and the University of Nevada, Reno.
Over the past 30 years, the WVU program has continued to evolve, with the authors progressively incorporating design throughout the chemical engineering undergraduate curriculum.
We view design as the cornerstone of chemical engineering practice. It is much more than developing specifications for a new chemical plant; design is a creative process that enables engineers to improve operations and create products that enhance quality of life.
Whether working on a new plant, guiding process modifications, or troubleshooting existing equipment, engineering design demands a broad range of knowledge and intellectual skills, allowing engineers to see both the big picture and the finer details, and—most importantly—understand when to focus on each.
In teaching design, we use process design as a framework. This encompasses the synthesis of entire chemical processes, from the preliminary sizing of equipment and flowsheet optimization to the economic evaluation and operation of chemical processes.
The goal of this book is to help chemical engineering students transition from solving well-defined problems in specific areas to integrating all the knowledge from their undergraduate education in order to solve open-ended process problems.
In this fifth edition, we have revised much of Section IV, “Analysis of Process Performance.” Previously, process performance was illustrated through a series of increasingly complex case studies.
In this edition, we take a more structured approach, focusing on the design of essential process equipment, including pipes, pumps, compressors (Chapter 19); heat exchangers (Chapter 20); separation equipment (Chapter 21); reactors (Chapter 22); and process vessels and steam ejectors (Chapter 23).
Each chapter begins with design procedures and fundamental equations, followed by performance (or rating) problems that illustrate how to analyze existing equipment.
While it may be tempting to use process simulators for this analysis, steady-state simulators often struggle with performance changes, and dynamic simulators—though more suited for this—are rarely used in undergraduate curricula.
As such, we consider the material on equipment performance in Section IV to be an essential part of the undergraduate design experience, and we encourage educators to integrate this material into design courses or related junior-year courses.”
