Explore Molecular Biology of the Gene (7th Edition) by James Watson, Tania Baker, Stephen Bell, Alexander Gann, Michael Levine and Richard Losick.
The new edition of Molecular Biology of the Gene, now in its 7th edition, marks the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the DNA structure in 1953—an occasion reflected in the cover design.
The double-helical structure, stabilized by specific pairing between the bases on the two strands, has become one of the most iconic images in science.
In the late 19th century, the microscope symbolized scientific advancement, only to be overtaken in the mid-20th century by the atom with orbiting electrons. By the century’s end, the image of the double helix had assumed that symbolic role.
The modern field of molecular biology emerged from the discovery of DNA’s structure and the immediate research directions it inspired. The landmark paper by Watson and Crick, which proposed the double helix, concluded with a now-famous sentence: “It has not escaped our notice that the specific pairing we have postulated immediately suggests a possible copying mechanism for the genetic material.”
This insight offered a molecular explanation for the replication of DNA and provided a foundation for understanding how genetic information is passed from one generation to the next. It also suggested that the sequence of bases along a DNA molecule could serve as a “genetic code,” thereby initiating efforts to unravel how genes dictate traits.
By the time the first edition of Molecular Biology of the Gene was released in 1965, just 12 years after the DNA structure was proposed, the replication mechanism had been experimentally confirmed. The genetic code had nearly been deciphered, and the processes governing gene expression and its regulation had been outlined.
Molecular biology had matured enough to warrant a comprehensive textbook—one that would, for the first time, define the curriculum for undergraduate instruction in this transformative field.
