Free download Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes (4th edition) by Richard M. Felder, Ronald W. Rousseau & Lisa G. Bullard in pdf.
According to the authors, “An introductory course in material and energy balances holds a pivotal role in the chemical engineering curriculum. At a fundamental level, it equips students with the skills needed to formulate and solve material and energy balances on chemical process systems while building a foundation for advanced topics like thermodynamics, transport phenomena, separation processes, kinetics, reactor design, and process dynamics and control.
More importantly, the course fosters an engineering mindset for addressing process-related challenges. This includes breaking down a process into individual components, identifying relationships between known and unknown process variables, gathering necessary data through experimentation, empiricism, and natural laws, and integrating the findings to derive solutions.
This book aims to support these objectives while offering a comprehensive and engaging introduction to the field of chemical engineering. The first chapter explores career paths pursued by recent chemical engineering graduates, highlighting the diversity of research, design, and production challenges they encounter.
Subsequent chapters systematically develop the framework for elementary process analysis, covering essential definitions, process variable calculations, conservation laws, thermodynamic principles, and the physical properties of process materials crucial for designing or optimizing processes.
Chemical processes serve as the foundation for presenting all key concepts in the text. Topics like vapor pressure, solubility, and heat capacity from physical chemistry are introduced as essential tools for calculating process variables or conducting material and energy balance analyses. Similarly, spreadsheets and computational techniques are discussed as practical tools for process analysis when relevant.
While the core principles of conservation laws and physical chemistry remain unchanged since the previous edition, updates in this version reflect the evolving scope of chemical engineering.
The most notable revisions appear in the problems at the end of each chapter, which now include approximately 350 new and updated exercises covering areas like biomedical, biochemical, biomolecular, environmental, energy, materials, and safety applications.
Additionally, new resources have been created for both students and instructors, including a spreadsheet-based tool that simplifies routine calculations, allowing learners to focus on higher-value problem-solving tasks.”
