Living in the Environment was created to help achieve three important goals: first, to explain the basics of environmental science to students; second, to provide a scientific foundation for understanding environmental problems and evaluating potential solutions; and third, to inspire action toward improving the way Earth is treated, recognizing that human lives and economies depend on it.

Environmental problems and possible solutions are examined through the lens of sustainability—the central theme of this book. A key belief underlying this perspective is that individuals can lead comfortable and fulfilling lives, and societies can achieve greater stability and prosperity, when sustainability becomes a guiding principle for personal choices and public policies.

This new edition continues a valuable collaboration with National Geographic Learning. As a result, numerous informative photographs, detailed maps, and inspiring stories of National Geographic Explorers—individuals making a positive impact—have been included.

These resources highlight encouraging developments in environmental science and aim to motivate readers to contribute toward a more sustainable world for current and future generations.

What’s New in This Edition?

Learning Objectives – Each chapter section now begins with learning objectives, allowing students to assess their understanding of the material.

Updated Data and Material – The field of environmental science evolves rapidly. To maintain accuracy, this edition incorporates the latest data, updated graphs, and revised case studies. Many new topics have also been introduced (see the list below).

Increased Emphasis on Critical Thinking – Critical thinking has been further integrated throughout the text. Small boxes containing Critical Thinking questions appear more frequently, encouraging deeper engagement with key concepts.

Unique among environmental science textbooks, this edition includes critical thinking questions within figure captions to promote interaction with visual data. The Learning Skills section following this Preface provides additional support for developing critical thinking abilities. Each Science Focus box includes a related question, and a set of Critical Thinking exercises appears at the end of each chapter.

Expanded Emphasis on Learning from Nature – First introduced in the 19th edition of Living in the Environment, this feature continues to be explored in greater depth. The Core Case Study in Chapter 1 highlights biomimicry, and additional Learning from Nature boxes—brief summaries of how lessons from nature can be applied—are now included throughout the book.
