According to the authors, “In the second edition, we had two primary objectives. First, as in the previous edition, we aimed to bridge the traditional role of process control with its expanded, modern role. This was achieved by integrating traditional topics with a broader perspective that encompassed more comprehensive process operations, control, and information systems.
Second, we sought to enhance the presentation of these concepts by updating, expanding, and refining the original content while incorporating new topics to better address current challenges in process control education.
With the third edition, we continue to introduce innovative features in both teaching methodologies and content, offering fresh perspectives:
- The traditional and expanded roles of process control in modern manufacturing are explicitly introduced and formally defined, providing a foundation for integrating new concepts into the traditional framework of process control textbooks.
- A “concept followed by example” approach is consistently applied throughout the book when addressing traditional process control topics, ensuring readers can connect theoretical principles with practical applications.
- A recurring example problem is introduced in the first chapter and revisited throughout the text as new concepts and strategies are applied. This culminates in a comprehensive control design strategy at the end of the book. The third edition includes new exercises and two additional appendices focusing on specific case studies.
- The link between process optimization and control (optimizing control) is explored, addressing how disturbances impact optimal plant operations. Key concepts such as steady-state and dynamic back-off are introduced to quantify the economic advantages of control. Additionally, recent advancements in heuristic algorithms inspired by natural processes are discussed in the context of optimizing complex nonlinear systems. The edition also delves into optimal transition policies for planned production changes.
- Modern industrial computer control system architectures are presented with real-world case studies and pilot-scale applications. Examples illustrate a wide range of control problems, from regulatory control of continuous processes and advanced control configurations to operations involving sequential and conventional regulatory loops.
This edition aims to provide a comprehensive and forward-looking resource for process control education, aligning traditional methodologies with emerging trends and technologies.”
