The sixth edition of Essentials of the Living World has been carefully refined to emphasize the true essentials. Previous editions included extensive background material to support core concepts, a well-intentioned approach that, unfortunately, added complexity for nonmajor students. While such details may benefit higher-level biology courses, they often introduced content beyond what instructors were teaching or students needed to learn.

For instance, understanding how the shape of p orbitals affects covalent bonding is crucial for biology majors but less relevant for nonmajors. This edition serves as a streamlined tool for instructors, ensuring that every concept presented is truly essential to the study of biology.

Although the details of molecular engineering may not be essential for students to learn, the impact of modern biological advancements on their lives is undeniable. With this in mind, this edition provides instructors with a valuable tool for explaining current discoveries.

Topics like genetic engineering of crops require careful discussion, while an even greater challenge lies in making the concept of gene editing accessible to nonmajor biology students. Significant attention has been given to CRISPR, covering its discovery (which explains its unusual name), its growing influence on medicine, and its potential role in gene drives.

The possibility of using gene drives to eradicate malaria is both exciting and somewhat daunting. Effectively teaching these concepts is both enjoyable and important, and this text is designed to support that effort.

Editing Your Genes. The most exciting advances since this text’s last edition have been applications of a new, easy-to-use tool called CRISPR that allows researchers to edit genes.

As described in Section 11.4 on pages 198–200, the gene-editing tool CRISPR is being used to treat human disease on many fronts, including developing a potential cure for AIDS, facilitating organ transplants from pigs (!), correcting disease-causing mutations such as cystic fibrosis and sickle-cell disease, and genetically modifying a patient’s own cells to fight leukemia.
